Tub Capacity

First, you need to know your spa's capacity, which is how much water it holds. Smaller spas may need to be changed more often than larger ones, as they have a smaller body of water, which makes it easier for bacteria to grow.

A 2-seater hot tub holds about 170 gallons of water.

A 4-seater hot tub holds about 330 gallons of water.

A large hot tub that can hold 7 or 8 people has a capacity of about 475 to 610 gallons.

Water Change Formula

A general rule of thumb is to divide the spa's capacity by 3, then divide by the number of people using it. Like this:

Spa Capacity ÷ 3 ÷ Estimated Average Number of Users

170 Gallons ÷ 3 ÷ 2 Users = Change Every 28 Days

475 Gallons ÷ 3 ÷ 2 Users = Change Every 79 Days

The water needs to be changed immediately if the following conditions occur:

1、Water remains cloudy/milky even after standing or using filters/clarifiers - indicates excessive suspended solids and organic matter, requiring complete water replacement.

2、 Unpleasant odors (fishy, chemical or musty) - signals water contamination or chemical imbalance that may irritate skin/respiratory system; replace water and reset disinfection system.

3、 Skin redness/itching after use or slippery biofilm on tub surfaces - requires water replacement and thorough scrubbing/disinfection.

General recommendations

Home use (2-3 people): Change the water every 1-2 weeks

Low-frequency use (1 person): Change the water every 3-4 weeks

Commercial/high-frequency use (7-8 people): Change the water every 3-5 days
